How to Use Apple Watch Water Lock

Water Lock is the official Apple Watch water eject feature introduced with watchOS 3 on Series 2. It serves two purposes: it locks the touchscreen during water activities so accidental taps do not trigger anything, and it plays a 165 Hz tone when you unlock it to push water out of the speaker.

Open Control Center on Your Apple Watch

Swipe up from the bottom of the watch face to open Control Center. On Apple Watch Series 4 and later, swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen. On older models, swipe up from the center of the watch face.

Look for the water droplet icon in Control Center. It looks like a droplet outline. Tap it once to enable Water Lock. The screen will show a lock symbol and the display will stop responding to touch, which is intentional.

Check That Water Has Been Ejected

You may see or feel small water droplets exit the speaker grille on the side of the watch. The tone confirms ejection has happened. If the speaker still sounds slightly muffled after one cycle, re-enable Water Lock and repeat the Digital Crown rotation for a second pass.

The Digital Crown Shortcut: How to Eject Water Fast

The Digital Crown shortcut is the quickest way to eject water from Apple Watch once Water Lock is already enabled. Many users do not realise the rotation itself is what triggers the ejection rather than any button press. Here is the full shortcut sequence:

Swipe up on the watch face, tap the droplet icon. The screen locks and displays the Water Lock indicator.

Apple Watch Ultra: Extended Eject Shortcut

Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2 have an extended water eject sequence because of their larger speaker and greater exposure to water during diving and extreme sports. The Digital Crown rotation on Ultra runs a longer eject tone, approximately 10 seconds, compared to around 3 to 5 seconds on standard Series models. This is intentional and provides a more thorough ejection for the larger grille openings.

watchOS Shortcut for Siri or Action Button

On Apple Watch Ultra, you can assign the Action Button to trigger Water Lock directly. Go to Settings, then Action Button, then select Water Lock. One press activates Water Lock, and a single Crown rotation ejects. On Series 9 and later running watchOS 10, you can also add Water Lock to the Smart Stack for faster access.

When Water Lock Is Not Enough: Using the Backup Tool

Water Lock solves most Apple Watch water-in-speaker situations on its own. But there are specific cases where additional eject cycles help or where the built-in feature is not available:

  • Apple Watch Series 1 or the original Series 0: These models do not have Water Lock at all. The browser-based tool is your only software option.
  • Speaker still muffled after 2 to 3 Water Lock cycles: Sometimes stubborn water in the grille mesh needs more than one ejection pass to fully clear.
  • Watch is not on your wrist but iPhone got wet too: You can use the tool on the iPhone itself in these situations.

The 165 Hz Science: Why This Frequency Works

Apple chose 165 Hz for Water Lock because of how it interacts with small speaker membranes and water surface tension. Here is what actually happens during water ejection on Apple Watch:

When the 165 Hz tone plays, the speaker membrane vibrates at 165 cycles per second. At this frequency, the membrane moves far enough and fast enough to generate a pressure wave that disrupts the surface tension holding water droplets against the speaker mesh. The droplets break free and are pushed outward through the grille openings.

Run Two Cycles After Swimming

After a pool or open water swim, run the Water Lock eject cycle twice. The first pass clears most of the water. The second pass gets the residual moisture sitting deeper in the speaker mesh. It takes less than 15 seconds total and noticeably improves audio quality.

Speaker Down During Ejection

When rotating the Digital Crown, hold the watch with the speaker grille facing downward or at a slight angle toward the floor. Gravity helps the loosened water drop away from the speaker rather than settling back into it. This small adjustment makes a measurable difference.

Pat the Speaker Grille After Ejection

After running an eject cycle, press the speaker side of the watch firmly against a dry, lint-free cloth for 3 to 4 seconds. The cloth absorbs the ejected water droplets before they can settle back against the grille. Do not rub, just press and lift.

Enable Water Lock Before Every Swim

Starting a swim workout automatically enables Water Lock, which is the easiest approach. But if you are heading into water during a non-workout situation, such as a bath or water activity, manually enable Water Lock first via Control Center so the Digital Crown eject is ready immediately when you need it.

Rinse with Fresh Water After Salt or Chlorine

Never Use Compressed Air on Apple Watch

What to Do After Ejecting Water from Apple Watch

Once you have completed one or two Water Lock eject cycles, here is the right way to confirm everything is working and protect the watch going forward:

  1. Play a sound or alarm on the watch to test audio quality. The Stopwatch or Timer alarm is a quick way to hear whether the speaker is clear again. Muffled sound after ejection means another cycle is needed.
  2. Check the microphone by making a Siri request directly on the watch. If Siri misunderstands you or struggles to activate, the microphone mesh may still have moisture. Run the 528 Hz frequency on the backup tool held near the watch microphone opening.
  3. Pat the speaker side dry with a lint-free cloth. Press firmly for a few seconds to absorb ejected droplets. Leave the watch face-up in a dry area for 20 minutes.
  4. Avoid charging immediately if the watch got heavily soaked. The magnetic charging contacts are sealed on modern Apple Watch models, but it is good practice to dry the watch back before placing it on the charger. If you see moisture near the charging area, wipe it with a dry cloth first.

Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2: Water Eject Differences

Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2 are designed for serious water activities including scuba diving to 100 metres and whitewater sports. Their water eject behaviour is noticeably different from standard Series models in a few important ways:

Longer Eject Tone Duration

The Ultra runs an extended eject sequence when you rotate the Digital Crown, roughly twice as long as a standard Series watch. This is because the Ultra has a larger, more powerful speaker and the longer tone is needed to fully clear the wider grille openings and any moisture that may have entered during deep water activities.

Louder Eject Output

The 165 Hz tone on Ultra plays at a noticeably higher volume than on standard models. You can often hear and see water droplets exiting the speaker grille during the cycle. This is intentional and normal behaviour for the Ultra.

Action Button Shortcut

Apple Watch Ultra has a dedicated Action Button on the left side. You can configure this button to activate Water Lock directly in Settings. For anyone using the Ultra for water sports regularly, setting the Action Button to Water Lock is the most efficient workflow: press the button before going in, rotate the Crown when you come out. Two actions, fully protected.

Depth App Integration

Apple Watch Ultra includes a Depth app that tracks dive depth and water temperature. When you exit a dive session recorded in the Depth app, watchOS prompts you to run a water eject cycle automatically. This means ejection is built into the end-of-dive workflow rather than requiring a separate step.

If you have been diving with Apple Watch Ultra below 10 metres, run at least two full eject cycles after surfacing. The pressure differential at depth can push water into the speaker grille more forcefully than surface-level splashing, and a single cycle may not be enough to clear it completely.
